City of Veszprém gets big jolt of government cash in advance of crucial by-election

The city of Veszprém was awarded a special grant of HUF 800 million at the last government meeting of 2014, privatbankar.hu reports.

News of the subsidy comes in the run-up to a crucial parliamentary by-election in February that could mark the end of the governing Fidesz-KDNP coalition’s two-thirds majority, in the event of an opposition victory.

The city’s Fidesz-KDNP affiliated mayor, Gyula Porga (pictured above with a kékfrank, a parallel currency launched with much fanfare some years ago by Veszprém and other cities looking to stimulate their economies) said the money would be used mainly for the renovation of streets and other public spaces.
